 Hammerdown

Excerpts from U. S. Navy Test of DFT #1500

Authorized by: NAVSURFWARCEN SHIPSYSENGSTA

After "HAMMERDOWN" was extensively tested at the Navy Test Laboratory at Phill. Pa. The Approved "IN USE" Test started Feb. 14, 1998 Test Areas, Atlantic, Med/Black sea, and Pacific Oceans.

"THE ADDITIVE WAS INTRODUCED INTO THE FUEL SYSTEM ON 14 FEB 98 ALONG WITH A COMPLETE FILTER CHANGE OUT. AN AVERAGE' OF 300 HOURS, ON EACH ENGINE, HAS BEEN EXPENDED SINCE THIS ADDITIVE WAS INTRODUCED. SINCE USING HAMMERDOWN -Ships Name- HAS NOTED THE FOLLOWING RESULTS:

A.  AN INCREASE IN FUEL PRESSURE BY 5 PSI. FUEL PRESSURE PRIOR TO HAMMERDOWN WAS NORMALLY 25 PSI BASED ON LOGS, CURRENTLY PRESSURES ARE 30 TO 32 PSI, INDICATING FUEL FILTERS ARE STAYING CLEANER.

B.  ROTATING OF KNIFE EDGE STRAINERS HAS BEEN SIGNIFICANTY REDUCED TO ONCE EVERY 3 DAYS STARTING AROUND THE 200 HOUR MARK, VICE THE KNIFE EDGE STRAINERS REQUIRING TO BE ROTATED ONCE EVERY 4 HOURS ON AVERAGE.

C.  THIRD STAGE RACOR FILTER VACUUM RANGED FROM 5 INCH OF VAC. AT FULL LOAD INITIALLY AND INCREASED TO APPROXIMATELY 10 INCHS AROUND THE 200 HUNDRED HOUR MARK.

D. CARBON BUILDUP AND EXHAUST SMOKE HAS BEEN MINIMIZED ON INITIAL STARTUP, AND THROUGHOUT ALL POWER RANGES. VISIBLE SMOKE SIGNATURE HAS BEEN REDUCED TO BARELY VISIBLE AT FULL POWER.

E. AN INSPECTION OF A SINGLE NELSON FILTER AFTER 250 HOURS OF OPERATION WAS CONDUCTED, WITH NO SIGNIFICANT EVIDENCE OF SLUDGE BUILDUP.

F. AFTER 300 HOURS NO FUEL FILTER CHANGEOUTS HAVE BEEN REQUIRED BASED ON OPERATIONAL PERFORMANCE. PREVIOUS TO INTRODUCTION OF HAMMERDOWN, 2-3 COMPLETE FUEL FILTER CHANGEOUTS WOULD HAVE BEEN REQUIRED GIVEN THE SAME NUMBER OF OPERATING HOURS.

G. FUEL EFFICIENCY: DATA RECORDED FOR PERFORMANCE CONSIST OF A ROUND TRIP TRANSIT TO NSRR PUERTO RICO (2636 NM), AT SPEEDS BETWEEN 18-20 KNOTS. TOTAL TIME FOR ROUND TRIP WAS 143 HRS IN WHICH -Ships -Name-CONSUMED 23,200 GAL OF F-76. BASED ON EXISTING FUEL CURVES THE SHIP SHOULD HAVE BURNED BETWEEN 174 AND 231 GPH AT 18-20 KTS. FIREBOLT CONSUMED AN AVERAGE OF 162 GPH THROUGHOUT THE TRIP, INDICATING A SIGNIFICANT FUEL SAVINGS FROM EXISTING CURVES. WEAX WAS VARIABLE WITH UP TO SEA STATE 4 THROUGHOUT.

  1. RESULTS THUS FAR IN THE TESTING OF HAMMERDOWN APPEAR TO YIELD SAVINGS IN FUEL COSTS, A REDUCTION IN FUEL FILTER CONSUMPTION AND ASSOCIATED MAN HOURS, AND A REDUCTION IN MAN HOURS SPENT CLEANING THE SHIP'S SIDES. TO DATE, -Ships Name-HAS NOTED NO DETRIMENTAL EFFECTS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS PRODUCT AND RECOMMENDS PATROL COASTAL FLEET WIDE INTRODUCTION OF THIS PRODUCT.//"

"ACQUIRED 12 GALS OF  HAMMERDOWN FROM PC-Ships Name- PRIOR TO DEPARTURE ON 15 MAY 98 FOR MED/BLACK SEA.

B. AFTER 350 HRS OF OPERATION AND 60,000 GALS OF FUEL OIL  CONSUMED, THE FOLLOWING DATA IS PROVIDED:

1. FILTER USAGE - DECREASED

2. FUEL PRESSURE - INCREASED

3. ROTATION OF KNIFE EDGE STRAINERS - DECREASED

4. RACOR   VACUUM - DECREASED

5. ENGINE EXHAUST TEMPS - NO CHANGE

6. CARBON SMOKE SIGNATURE - DECREASED

7. CARBON SOOT ON SIDES - DECREASED

                    8. FUEL ECONOMY - INCREASED

C. VESSEL HAS PERFORMED (1) COMPLETE F/O FILTER CHANGE OUT ON ALL (6) DSL ENGINES DURING BSF IN ROTA, SPAIN. VESSELREC APPROX 200 GALS OF WATER FROM USNS -Ships Name-, DURING RAS, DUE TO HOLE IN THE FUELING RIG. ALTHOUGH -Ships Name- STRIPPED THE WATER FROM THE F/0 TANK, THERE WAS SOME WATER INTRUSION INTO THE F/0 SYS. CHI BELIEVES THE SMALL AMOUNT OF WATER, AND INITIAL EFFECTS OF HAMMERDOWN, WERE CONTRUBUTING FACTORS FOR F/O FILTER CHANGE OUT IN ROTA.

D. CARBON SOOT ON THE SIDES OF -Ships Name- HAS DECREASED AT LEAST 75% SINCE THE USE OF HAMMERDOWN, SIGNIFICANTLY APPROVING THE PHYSICAL APPEARANCE OF VESSEL, AND REDUCING MAN HRS PREVIOUS SPENT CLEANING THE SIDES OF THE SHIP.

E.  F/0 ECONOMY HAS SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVED SINCE USING HAMMERDOWN. -Ships Name- DISPLACEMENT IS APPROX 390 TONS SINCE THE, F/0 TANKS AND CCRS ALTERATIONS WERE ACCOMPLISHED, THEREFORE BURNING MORE F/0 AT THE SAME SPEEDS AND DISTANCES THAN ANY OTHER PC. -Ships Name- ESTIMATES AN APPROX 75O TO 1000 GALLONS SAVED FOR A FULL TANK OF F/O (18,050 GALS) SINCE THE USE OF HAMMERDOWN.

E. VESSEL IS CURRENTY OUT OF HAMMERDOWN, BUT WILL CONTINUE TO PROVIDE MORE FEEDBACK WHEN MORE HAMMERDOWN IS RECEIVED.//"

"2.  TO DATE, TESTS WERE PERFORMNED BY THE PC SQUADRONS TO DETERMINE THE EFFECTS OF THIS ADDITIVE ON THE PC CLASS. INTENDED AS ONE PART OF A MULTI PART RESPONSE TO FUEL ISSUES IN THE CLASS, THE USE OF AN ADDITIVE IN THE FUEL IS TO MINIMIZE GROWTH OF BIOLOGICALS IN THE FUEL TANKS AND ULTIMATE CLOGGING OF THE FILTRATION SYSTEM. RESULTS OF THIS TEST INDICATED NOT ONLY A REDUCTION OF BIOLOGICALS, BUT ALSO THE ADDED SIDE BENEFIT OF MORE COMPLETE BURNING OF FUEL, LESS EXHAUST SMOKE, AND A POSSIBLE DECREASE IN FUEL USAGE.

3.  AS INDICATED REF A PARA 4, RESULTS OF THE USE OF HAMMERDOWN ARE STILL BEING TABULATED AND ALL SHIPS USING IT ARE REQUIRED TO REPORT RESULTS. TANKS SHOULD BE CLEAN PRIOR TO INITIAL USE DUE TO THE POSSIBILITY OF DISLODGING EXISTING GROWTH AND CLOGGING OF FILTERS. PARTICULAR ATTENTION SHOULD ALSO BE GIVEN TO THE CORRECT DOSAGES FOR EACH ADDITION. GIVEN THE COST OF THIS PRODUCT, ONLY THE AMOUNTS SPECIFIED SHOULD BE ADDED. MORE IS NOT BETTER, AND WASTES MONEY. HAMMERDOWN IS AVAILABLE IN I GALLON OR 55 GALLON CONTAINERS. FOR EASE OF ADDITION AND STORAGE. 1 GALLON CONTAINERS ARE RECOMMENDED AND CAN BE ORDERED THROUGH THE NORMAL SUPPLY CHANNELS. THERE IS A THREE WEEK LEAD TIME FOR RECEIPT UNTIL THE MANUFACTURER GETS UP TO SPEED FOR THE INCREASED DEMAND.

4. FOR ALL CSBR2 PATROL COASTALS: USE OF HAMMERDOWN IS APPROVED. TAKE REF A FOR ACTION.//"
